Breastfeeding

Tongue-Tie Seminar

Tongue tie is a condition where the frenulum of a baby's tongue is too short causing many breastfeeding problems. It is very easily remedied by simply clipping the frenulum which frees baby's tongue so that they can latch on better. They don't even need to be numbed as the frenulum has very few nerves, and it does not even bleed more than a drop or two. This condition is hereditary and is more widespread than health professionals once thought. At the turn of the century, doctors and midwives checked every baby at birth for this. Once bottlefeeding became the norm, baby's no longer needed this done. It was so common to clip a baby's frenulum at birth that midwives invented a specialized tool to lift the tongue to check under it and snip with sterile scissors before giving baby to mom to latch on. About 70% of baby's were clipped, and 100% were checked. Now 0% are checked at birth, and about 4.9% are clipped later at the Dr's office. It's so rare now, that if your baby does have tongue-tie it is almost impossible to find a Dr. who knows how to do this anymore or will attempt to try. But essentially midwives, pediatricians, ENT's, oral surgeons, and even dentists can preform this simple in office procedure. Once it's done, baby can latch on immediately afterwards and nurse much better often that very moment!

Formula for Disaster; Documentary of Breastfeeding in the Philippines

Here's a link to a documentary on Breastfeeding in the Philippines. It's so sad, they are illegally advertising formula to mothers and losing their breastfeeding culture. This practice is so illegal and they do it anyway. The mothers there actually believe the ads that say that babies will grow to be geniuses and other misinformation. The median income is about $2 US dollars a day, or P$28,000 Philippine pesos a year, about US $58/mo. Formula costs about $300 pesos/can or about $1000 Pesos/month. That is more than half of their income per month just for formula!!
